Since it was established in January 2007 as a partnership between leading international industrial companies and the UK Government, The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has made important progress towards accelerating the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies to help meet the UK’s energy targets.
By early 2010 the ETI has already announced 14 projects worth over £52 million and has additionally entered contract discussions worth over £70 million.
The ETI has funded projects within the following programme areas. Click here for details
Offshore Wind
Transport
Carbon Capture and Storage
Distributed Energy
Marine
Energy System Modelling Environment
Energy Storage & Distribution
Buildings
The ETI is planning and developing new projects across its programme portfolio, including one that will look at ways of refurbishing with the latest energy efficient technology the 21 million domestic properties that will still be in use by 2050.
In addition to achievements in individual projects the ETI has also:
• Established an in-house team of experts and a range of technical working groups bringing together global expertise across the range of programme areas.
• Developed its Technology Strategy, incorporating an integrated approach to technology, bringing together the essential components required to make systems work and the understanding of how individual technologies can contribute to the performance of the UK energy system through to 2050 and beyond.
• Produced the UK Energy Systems Model; a blueprint that will help identify those technologies capable of having the greatest impact for 2050.
• Led a series of briefing sessions for Government, Academics, Regional Development Agencies and others to explain our Technology Strategy.
• Provided input to Government policy development in a variety of areas, including Heat and Networks.
• Collaborated with a range of Academics, Small to Medium-Sized Enterprises, Research institutions, Technology Strategy Board, EPSRC, Carbon Trust others. Member of the Low Carbon Innovation Group and Energy Research Partnership.
• Worked with the National Skills Academy for Power to identify the skills likely to be needed to implement innovative low carbon technologies within the power sector.
The UK faces a market challenge in accelerating secure, reliable and affordable low carbon technologies towards 2050. The ETI is focused on helping to meet this challenge through identifying and facilitating future technological priorities requiring development at large-scale for the commercial market.
Working with UK Government, Global Industries, Academics and Research institutions, Small to Medium Sized businesses (SMEs) and others, the ETI brings diverse, leading expertise to bear on the UK’s energy challenge. Please see our latest brochure ETI "Defining the Roadmap 2050".
