Working with government and the private sector, the Energy Technologies Institute is aiming to address the difficult question of how to cut carbon emissions on Britain’s roads.

The UK heavy-duty fleet currently contributes almost 9% to overall UK carbon emissions and light vehicles (cars and vans) contribute 51% of the UK Kyoto transport emissions.

A seismic technology shift in both the UK light and heavy-duty vehicle is therefore essential to reach the ambitious target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.

The ETI hope to achieve this difficult target reduction through its Heavy-Duty and Light Vehicle programmes.

Light-Vehicles

  • The ETI launched the world's most extensive evaluation of consumer attitudes to plug-in vehicles, its Plug-in Vehicle Economics and Infrastructure project in July.
  • The ETI is initially working on its Joined-Cities Plan with Birmingham, Coventry, Glasgow, London, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Oxford and Sunderland. This will support the roll-out of a single national network that will ultimately enable plug-in vehicles to be easily used and recharged anywhere, including the home.
  • The formation of an intelligent architecture advisory group, bringing together global system integrators and major vehicle recharging network providers.
  • Supporting the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) in Delivering the Electrification of Transport in Test Bed UK.

Heavy-Duty Vehicles

  • The ETI is beginning to analyse the UK’s heavy-duty vehicle fleet and evaluate which technologies could increase efficiency and contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption.
  • The variety of vehicle types, applications and technologies to improve efficiency are diverse and difficult to find a single universal technology solution.
