Distributed Energy

Energy Technologies Institute's programme for Distributed Energy (DE) technologies

The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) invites organisations to join us in creating major new development and demonstration projects in Distributed Energy (DE) technologies. We expect to fund a small number of major projects at approximately £5M to £10M each.

Analysis by a range of groups including ETI has shown that increased deployment of Distributed Energy could reduce UK CO2 emissions associated with heat and power generation by up to 30%.

The ETI can consider a wide range of projects, ranging from those that could benefit individual householders, to those aimed at commercial or industrial sites, or even whole communities, typically producing energy from 1 kWe to 10 MWe.

Key areas of focus could include;

  • Energy conversion devices
  • Energy storage systems
  • Integrated systems for maximum efficiency and lowest through-life cost
  • Combined heat and power (CHP) modularisation and cost reduction
  • Integrated energy supply processing, such as anaerobic digestion, gasification of waste, utilisation of waste gases.

This is not an exhaustive list and projects in related areas are welcome.

The total funds available for investment in DE projects is estimated at up to £30M. Projects are likely to involve consortia made up of several organisations, large and small, to ensure that we have all the expertise required for success.

Project Building Workshop

To be considered for participation in the ETI DE Technology Programme please complete the Expression Of Interest form and return to de@eti.co.uk no later than Friday 23rd May 2008.

Successful respondents will be invited to a project building workshop in June, which will provide a forum for interested participants to develop project proposals and consortia.

For full details of the programme, please download the ETI Distributed Energy Information Pack.

Stakeholder Consultation Workshop

The ETI is also holding a Stakeholder Consultation Workshop in early May 2008 for planners, developers, installers and other customers of DE technologies. This workshop will present the working group's findings and develop priorities for projects that support the overall ETI objectives.

A limited number of places are still available for this workshop, so if you are interested in attending, please complete an EoI and return it to de@eti.co.uk by Friday 18th April 2008.

Non-attendance at this workshop will not in any way prejudice your ability to submit an EoI form and participate in the DE Technology Programme.

Project Building Workshop Held for Distributed Energy

On 23 and 24 June, 39 delegates from diverse backgrounds worked to create initial proposals for DE projects: five potential areas were presented for further development.

The next step is for them to work together to devise and submit summary proposals by 9 July, which will be evaluated by a independent selection panel on 16th July.
Those involved with the ideas that are selected for further exploration will be invited to a three-day Project Development workshop from the 22nd to 25th July.

Thank you to all those who collaborated at this workshop - the momentum will continue.
